The Ultimate Guide to Planning Family Photos During Your Galveston TX Beach Vacation

So... you're thinking about family photos at the beach?

First of all—excellent choice.

There is just something magical about the Texas coast. Kids can run barefoot, grandparents get to cuddle babies without anyone worrying about muddy shoes, the sunsets are spectacular, and somehow everyone just seems a little more relaxed. Some of my favorite family photos have happened when everyone forgot they were "having photos taken" and simply enjoyed being together.

Whether you're planning a vacation to Galveston, escaping to Surfside for a long weekend, celebrating a family reunion, welcoming a new baby, marking an anniversary, or finally getting all three generations together in one place, beach photography creates memories that feel natural, joyful, and genuinely you.

And if you're organizing one of those wonderful (and slightly chaotic!) extended family vacations with grandparents, siblings, cousins, in-laws, toddlers, teenagers, and maybe even the family dog... first of all, I salute you. Coordinating everyone's schedules is probably harder than my job. The good news? Once you've managed to get everyone together in one place, you've already done the hardest part. Let's make sure you leave with photos that your family will treasure for decades.

I've photographed families all over the Houston area and along the Texas coast, and one thing I've learned is that beach sessions are a little different from park sessions. Wind, tides, sand, crowds, parking, sunset times, and even which beach you choose can make a surprisingly big difference to your experience—and your photos.

That's exactly why I put together this guide.

Think of it as everything I tell my own clients before their session, plus a few insider tips that most visitors (and even plenty of locals) don't know until they've learned the hard way.

Which Beach Should You Choose?

One of the first questions I get is:

"Which beach is best for family photos?"

The honest answer? It depends a little on your family and what kind of experience you're looking for. The good news is that there really isn't a bad choice. Each beach has its own personality, and I love helping families pick the location that fits them best.

Surfside Beach: Perfect for Local Families & a More Relaxed Feel

If you're coming from Sugar Land, Richmond, Katy, Sienna, Fulshear, or anywhere in Fort Bend County, Surfside is often my first recommendation.

Why?

Quite simply... it's closer.

That means less time in the car, fewer "Are we there yet?" questions from the back seat, and a much easier evening with young kids who may already be close to bedtime.

Surfside also has a wonderfully laid-back, small beach town feel. It's a little quieter than Galveston, parking is generally easier, and it's often less crowded—especially if we avoid holiday weekends. The beach itself is wide enough that we can usually find plenty of space to let kids run, play, and just be themselves without feeling like we're weaving around dozens of other families.

If your dream photos involve barefoot kids chasing waves, collecting shells, laughing with grandma and grandpa, or everyone ending the session with sandy feet and happy memories, Surfside is hard to beat.

And, if you need a place to eat before your session I highly recommend the Seahorse Grill- beautiful waterfront patio and great food. They also have lawn games to keep the kids entertained while you wait for your food.

Galveston: Perfect for Vacation Memories

If you're vacationing in Galveston or staying on the island, it almost always makes sense to photograph your family there.

After all, your photos become part of the story of your vacation.

Whether you're celebrating a family reunion, a milestone anniversary, a babymoon, or simply enjoying a week together, there's something really special about capturing everyone where you're already making memories.

One of my favorite things about Galveston is the variety. Depending on where we go, we can photograph wide sandy beaches, dunes, sea oats, driftwood, or more open coastal views. If your extended family has rented a beach house, we may even be able to start right there before wandering down to the shoreline.

My Personal Favourite: Galveston Island State Park

If you're looking for scenery that feels a little more natural and less "busy beach," Galveston Island State Park is one of my absolute favorite places to photograph families.

Instead of rows of houses and busy stretches of sand, you'll find beautiful dunes, sea oats swaying in the breeze, wide open beaches, and a much more untouched coastal feel. It's especially gorgeous at sunset when the light turns golden and everything seems to slow down for a little while.

It's one of those locations where the scenery quietly complements your family instead of competing for attention.

If you've seen some of my beach portfolio and thought, "That's exactly the look I want," there's a good chance those photos were taken here.

What About San Luis Pass Beach?

San Luis Pass Beach can be absolutely beautiful. It's located toward the western end of Galveston Island and offers a quieter, more secluded feel than many of the island's more popular beaches.

There is, however, one important thing to know.

Some of the best access points involve driving over very soft sand. If you don't have a four-wheel-drive vehicle (or at least a vehicle with good clearance), there's a real chance of getting stuck—and that's definitely not the way anyone wants to start family photo day!

For that reason, I don't generally recommend San Luis unless you're already familiar with the area or have an appropriate vehicle. There are plenty of other beautiful beaches that are much easier to access and every bit as photogenic.

Don't Worry If You Can't Decide

If all of this sounds like a lot to think about, don't worry—that's what I'm here for.

Once I know where you're staying, who's coming to the session (especially if grandparents, toddlers, or extended family are involved), and the kind of look you're hoping for, I'll happily recommend the location that I think will work best for your family.

Sometimes the "perfect" beach isn't the prettiest one on a map—it's the one that's easiest for Grandpa to walk on, keeps the toddlers happy, or lets everyone relax and enjoy the evening together.

And in my experience, relaxed families always make the best photographs.

What Should We Wear for Beach Photos?

If you've ever found yourself staring into your closet thinking, "I have absolutely nothing to wear," you're definitely not alone.

The good news? Beach sessions are actually one of the easiest sessions to dress for.

The beach already gives us an incredible backdrop—soft sand, blue water, sea oats, and gorgeous sunsets—so your outfits don't need to compete with the scenery. In fact, simpler is usually better.

Shoes? Honestly... I Love Barefoot.

If you've looked through my portfolio, you've probably noticed one thing...

A lot of my families are barefoot.

There's just something about bare feet on the beach that instantly makes photos feel more relaxed, connected, and authentic. It also saves everyone from trying to walk through sand in heels (which is nobody's idea of a good time!).

My recommendation is to wear shoes that are easy to slip off and that you don't mind getting sandy. Flip-flops, sandals, or casual shoes are perfect because they'll usually spend most of the session sitting off to the side while we make the most of the beach.

Expect to Get a Little Wet (It's Worth It!)

One thing that's unique about the Texas coast is the incredibly gradual slope of many of our beaches.

Instead of the water dropping off quickly, the shoreline often creates these beautiful, shallow pools of shimmering water that reflect the sky like glass. They're one of my favourite places to photograph families because they create such dreamy, light-filled images.

To capture those photos, I'll usually have you right down at the water's edge where the waves gently wash in and out.

The bonus?

Kids absolutely LOVE it.

Once we've captured the "everyone looking at the camera and smiling" photos that Grandma is going to frame, I love giving kids permission to actually enjoy being at the beach. We'll let them splash through the water, chase little waves, hold hands with Mom and Dad, or run with their siblings while I capture all those genuine moments of laughter and connection.

Some of my favourite images from a session happen after everyone stops worrying about staying perfectly clean.

So yes... plan on getting your feet wet. I promise it's worth it.

Let the Beach Be Your Colour Palette

When you're choosing outfits, think about what's already around you.

Soft sand.

Blue water.

Sea oats.

A pastel sunset.

That's your colour palette.

You don't need bright, bold colours to make your photos stand out—in fact, they often pull attention away from the people who matter most.

I generally find these colours photograph beautifully:

• Soft neutrals

• Creams and whites

• Beige, tan and oatmeal

• Dusty blues

• Sage and soft greens

• Muted pastels

They're timeless, easy to coordinate, and they let your family be the focus rather than your clothing.

And don't worry about everyone matching exactly. Coordinating colours always photographs more naturally than everyone wearing the exact same shirt.

Keep the Sunset in Mind

One of my favourite parts of beach sessions is the light.

As the sun gets lower, the sky often fills with warm golds, peaches, pinks, and soft oranges. During editing, I'll often enhance those sunset tones just a little to bring out the natural beauty that was already there.

That means your outfits don't have to do all the work.

Simple, classic colours almost always look better than bright, punchy ones because they let those beautiful sunset colours shine.

Want a More Relaxed Look?

You don't have to dress like you're heading to a formal event.

One of my favourite beach looks is actually one of the simplest:

Jeans paired with light-coloured tops.

Near the end of the session, you can roll up your jeans, kick off your shoes, and head into the water together. It feels fun, casual, and completely natural—and those playful, carefree moments often end up being the photos families love the most.

My Biggest Tip

Wear clothes that make you feel like yourself.

If you're comfortable, your kids are comfortable, and you're not constantly adjusting straps, tugging at shirts, or worrying about keeping everyone perfectly spotless, you'll relax. And when you relax, the real smiles, hugs, laughter, and connection naturally follow.

At the end of the day, nobody looks back at family photos and says, "I'm so glad we wore the exact right shade of blue." They remember how much fun they had together.

Can We Bring the Dog?

Short answer?

Absolutely!

In fact... I hope you do.

Dogs are family too, and I absolutely love including them in sessions. Some of my favourite photos are the completely unscripted moments—a happy Labrador charging through the waves, a toddler giggling while trying to throw a ball, or a senior dog quietly sitting beside the grandparents who have loved them for years.

If your pup is part of your family's story, they deserve to be in a few photos.

Are Dogs Allowed on the Beach?

The good news is that many beaches in both Galveston and Surfside welcome dogs, provided they're under control and you follow the local rules.

Most public beaches require dogs to be kept on a leash, and it's always a good idea to bring along poop bags and some fresh water for them—especially during the warmer months when the sand can get surprisingly hot.

The leash requirement sometimes makes people hesitate about including their dog, but honestly... don't let that stop you.

"But I Don't Want a Leash in Every Photo..."

I hear this all the time.

The good news is that leashes are usually one of the easiest things to remove during editing.

As long as your dog is safely on a leash during the session (which helps keep them—and everyone else—safe), I can often remove the leash afterward so your finished photos still have that clean, natural look.

Safety always comes first, and Photoshop can take care of the rest.

A Few Tips for a Great Session with Your Dog

If you're bringing your four-legged family member along, here are a few things that make everything go smoothly:

• Bring plenty of water and a collapsible bowl.

• Pack a few favourite treats (or a squeaky toy if that's more motivating!).

• Consider giving them a chance to burn off a little energy before the session.

• Bring a towel for the drive home—you'll almost certainly have one happy, sandy dog by the end of the evening.

If your dog has a favorite bandana or collar that matches your family's style, feel free to bring it along. Sometimes those little touches add just the right amount of personality.

My Favorite Plan

One thing I often suggest is including your dog for the first part of the session.

We'll capture those beautiful family portraits with everyone together, let your pup have their moment in the spotlight, and then, if you'd like, a friend or family member can take them home while we finish the rest of your session.

That way you get the best of both worlds—photos with your whole family, including your furry family member, and plenty of relaxed portraits afterward if your dog decides they've had enough of being a model for one day!

The Best Time of Day for Beach Photos

If I could give just one piece of advice when planning your beach session, it would be this:

Trust me on the timing.

I know... it can feel a little strange when I suggest starting your session an hour or so before sunset, especially if you have little ones who are getting close to bedtime.

But there is a very good reason.

The last hour of daylight is what photographers lovingly call golden hour, and it's when the beach truly comes alive. The harsh daytime sun softens into a warm golden glow, the sky begins to fill with beautiful pinks and oranges, and the water starts reflecting all of those incredible colours.

It's honestly my favourite time to photograph.

Why Not Earlier?

Texas beaches are beautiful all day, but the middle of the afternoon can be... well... a little unforgiving.

The sun is high overhead, creating harsh shadows under eyes, lots of squinting, and much stronger contrast than we want for soft, flattering family portraits. It's also usually the hottest part of the day, which isn't ideal when you're asking little ones (or grandparents!) to spend an hour outside.

Waiting until the evening means cooler temperatures, softer light, and a much more relaxed experience for everyone.

Every Session Ends with the Best Light

One thing I do intentionally is save some of my favourite photographs until the end of your session.

We'll start by capturing the classic family portraits while everyone is still fresh and clean. Then, as the sun gets lower and the light becomes even more beautiful, we'll move closer to the water, let the kids play a little more, and capture those candid moments that often become everyone's favourites.

If you've seen photos on my website with glowing skies, shimmering reflections on the sand, and families laughing in the waves... those were almost certainly taken during the final part of the session.

"But My Kids Go to Bed Early..."

I completely understand.

As a mom myself, I know bedtime routines are sacred!

The good news is that kids often surprise us. Beach sessions are full of exploring, splashing, collecting shells, chasing waves, and spending uninterrupted time with their favourite people. It feels much more like a fun family outing than standing around smiling for a camera.

Most parents leave saying, "I can't believe they stayed in such a good mood!"

And if someone falls asleep on the drive home? I'd call that a pretty successful evening.

Don't Be Afraid of the Wind

If you've ever been to the beach, you already know one thing...

There's usually going to be a breeze.

And honestly?

I love it.

One of the biggest misconceptions about beach photography is that everything has to be perfectly neat and perfectly still. In reality, a little movement is exactly what makes beach photos feel alive.

A gentle breeze catches a dress, makes the grasses sway, and adds beautiful motion that you simply can't recreate anywhere else.

Hair Doesn't Have to Be Perfect

If you have long hair, don't stress about making every strand stay perfectly in place.

It won't.

And that's okay!

I actually work with the wind rather than fighting it. One little trick I often use is positioning whoever has longer hair—usually Mom and daughters—on the side of the group that's away from the beach.

Since the breeze is usually blowing in from the water, it naturally lifts and sweeps their hair gently away from their faces instead of whipping it across their eyes. The result is soft, natural movement that photographs beautifully.

Of course, every day is a little different, but it's one of those small details that can make a surprisingly big difference.

I Usually Carry Emergency Hair Ties!

Here's a little behind-the-scenes secret...

I almost always end up with a couple of spare hair ties in my camera bag.

They're especially handy for younger girls whose hair may keep blowing into their faces or become a distraction after they've spent twenty minutes running around the beach.

Sometimes we'll leave hair down for most of the session and then quickly switch to a ponytail or messy bun for the last few photos if that's what's working best. Beach sessions are wonderfully relaxed, so there's absolutely no rule that says one hairstyle has to last the whole evening.

Embrace the Beach

The beach isn't meant to be perfectly polished.

Your hair might get a little windswept.

Your feet will definitely get sandy.

Your kids will probably get a little wet.

And that's exactly why I love photographing there.

Some of the most beautiful images happen when families stop worrying about looking perfect and simply enjoy being together. A little breeze, a little laughter, and a whole lot of love will always photograph better than perfectly still hair ever could.
