Getting the whole family together is no small feat.

Someone's flying in from another state. One family has a soccer tournament. Someone else can only come for three days. Grandma's been counting down for months, the cousins haven't seen each other since last summer, and somehow... against all odds... everyone actually managed to make it.

First of all—congratulations!

Why a Beach Family Reunion Makes the Perfect Time for Photos

Life gets busy.

Kids grow.

Parents become grandparents.

Grandparents become great-grandparents.

Before you know it, five years have passed and everyone is saying,

"We really should get family photos next time we're all together."

Well...

This is next time.

Beach vacations are wonderful because everyone is already together, already relaxed, and already making memories.

Instead of trying to coordinate a photo session back home (where everyone's rushing to hockey practice, dance lessons, work meetings and dentist appointments), you're already sharing slow mornings, sunset walks and family dinners.

Photographs simply become part of the experience.

My Goal Isn't Perfectly Posed Photos...

Don't get me wrong.

We'll absolutely capture the classic portrait that Grandma wants to frame over the fireplace.

Everyone looking at the camera.

Everyone smiling.

Mission accomplished.

But honestly?

Those usually aren't the photos people cry over.

It's the ones in between.

The cousins inventing a game in the sand.

The favourite uncle pretending to chase everyone into the waves.

Grandma laughing so hard she forgets I'm even there.

Grandpa quietly holding the youngest grandchild's hand while they watch the sunset.

The siblings who haven't all been in the same place for years teasing each other exactly the way they did when they were twelve.

Those are the moments that become priceless.

And because I photograph them while they're naturally unfolding, they never feel forced.

We Start with a Conversation (And It's One of the Most Important Parts)

Every extended family session includes a planning chat before photo day.

Not because I need to know everyone's favourite colour...

But because every family has its own wonderful little dynamics.

Maybe one child is feeling shy lately.

Maybe one teenager would rather be literally anywhere else.

Maybe Grandpa tires easily.

Maybe one cousin has sensory sensitivities.

Maybe your three-year-old only smiles if someone makes dinosaur noises.

Or maybe...

There's one sister-in-law who has appointed herself Creative Director of the entire vacation.

(Every family has one. Don't worry—I say that with love.)

These little details help me gently guide the session in a way that feels easy and natural for everyone.

By the time we meet on the beach, I already have a game plan.

That means you don't have to spend the entire evening organizing people.

You get to actually enjoy your family.

I'll take care of the rest.

Here's How I Keep Everyone Happy

One mistake I see during large family sessions is trying to photograph every combination all at once.

That's exhausting.

Instead, we keep things moving.

We'll usually photograph:

• The entire extended family together.

• Grandparents with all the grandchildren.

• Grandparents with each individual family.

• Each immediate family.

• Siblings.

• Cousins.

• Couples.

• Individual children.

• Any special groupings you've requested ahead of time.

And here's the best part...

While one family is in front of the camera, everyone else gets to relax.

The kids can collect seashells.

The cousins can dip their toes in the water.

Someone inevitably starts skipping rocks.

Grandma gets to watch the grandkids play.

People chat.

Laugh.

Take in the incredible sunset.

It feels much more like an evening at the beach than waiting in line for school pictures.

The Texas Coast Was Made for Family Memories

One of the things I love most about photographing along the Texas coast is how family-friendly it is.

Our beaches stay surprisingly warm for much of the year.

Now...

I should probably admit that I'm originally from Canada.

So my definition of "cold" may be a little different than yours.

You might see me happily photographing in weather that has Texans reaching for sweaters.

But genuinely, outside of a few chilly weeks in the middle of winter, beach sessions are possible during much of the year—and fall is actually one of my favourite seasons.

The temperatures are more comfortable, the beaches are quieter, and the sunsets are absolutely spectacular.

What About Grandma or Grandpa?

This is something I think about long before photo day.

If grandparents have mobility concerns—or anyone in your group has difficulty walking—we'll choose a location that makes the evening as easy as possible.

Sometimes that means selecting a beach with excellent parking and short, accessible walkways.

Sometimes it means choosing a quieter access point where we won't have to navigate crowds.

And one of my favorite options?

Photographing your family right outside your beachfront vacation rental.

If you're staying in a house on the beach, we can often simply walk onto the sand directly in front of your Airbnb or rental home.

I absolutely love this. Not only is it incredibly convenient, but years from now your children will be able to look at those photographs and say, "That's the beach where we built sandcastles all week."

There is something really special about preserving the exact place where your family made memories together.

Local Knowledge Makes a Difference

The beach is one of my family's favorite places to spend time, so I'm always discovering new spots, quieter beach accesses, fun restaurants, great ice cream stops, and little hidden gems along the coast.

At some point during almost every extended family session, something unexpected happens.

A toddler decides everyone needs to dance.

A wave catches someone by surprise.

The cousins burst into laughter over something nobody else understands.

Grandpa starts telling one of his famous stories.

Everyone forgets I'm there.

That's my favorite moment.

Because that's when your photographs stop looking like "family portraits" and start looking like your family.
