If you’re planning a family reunion photoshoot in Galveston or looking to capture your Galveston vacation photos, Galveston Island State Park is one of my absolute favorite locations—and this recent extended family session is the perfect example of why.
Last week, I met a sweet multigenerational family celebrating Thanksgiving week together. Grandma and Grandpa had flown in, along with one of their sons and his family, and they were all staying in a nearby beach rental in Galveston. With everyone finally in one place, they decided it was the perfect opportunity to update their family photos—and honestly, beach reunions are some of the best times to do it. Everyone is relaxed, happy, and already in that “vacation glow.”
Starting the Session at the Boardwalk Overlook
We kicked things off at the boardwalk near the restrooms and outdoor showers at Galveston Island State Park. This spot gives you a gorgeous overlook of the dunes and greenery, plus an open view toward the sunset. It’s such an underrated part of the park, and the mix of textures—weathered wood, sea grass, soft skies—makes it perfect for those first warm-up portraits.
With Grandma and Grandpa, their two sons and spouses, and two adorable granddaughters (ages 4 and 1!), we got some beautiful combinations right away. The girls looked especially precious in their matching dresses, little brown leather shoes, and bows in their hair. They stole the show immediately—no surprise there.
Heading Down to the Beach
After portraits on the overlook, we walked down the path to the beach. One of the biggest reasons I recommend Galveston Island State Park for family photos is that there are no cars allowed on the beach, so you don’t have to worry about vehicles in the background or dodging traffic between shots. It also tends to be cleaner and less crowded because of the small entry fee—totally worth it.

And then… the sunset happened. We got SO lucky. Pink skies, soft golden light, and that perfect backlit glow that makes everyone look like they stepped into a postcard.
The girls played in the sand, Grandpa beamed with pride, and it was heart-melting watching how loved those little ones are—dotting from mom to dad to grandma to uncle and back again.
Why Beach Reunions Are Perfect for Updated Family Photos
A beach reunion is the perfect built-in time to update your albums, create gifts for extended family, and capture everyone together in one beautiful place. For this session we photographed:
The full extended family group
Grandparents with grandkids
Each individual family
Couples
Solo portraits of the granddaughters
Candid moments that always end up being client favorites
These kinds of sessions are perfect for creating coordinating wall art and flexible layouts—each family can mix and match combinations to create their own unique displays.

What to Wear for a Galveston Beach Photoshoot
Planning a beach session? Here’s what works beautifully:
Plan for the wind.
We always have at least a breeze, so flowy fabrics photograph beautifully. Long hair down looks amazing but consider bringing a bow or other small hair tie for any little girls to keep stray hairs out of their adorable faces.
Color palettes that shine.
While many families choose light neutrals for the beach (and they always look dreamy!), dark colors can be stunning too. In this session, Mom wore a deep rust-colored dress, which added gorgeous contrast against the lighter colors worn by the rest of the family. It popped in the soft sunset light in the best way.

Comfort matters.
Choose clothing you can move in—walking on sand, picking up the kids, twirling in the breeze—it all makes the photos more natural.
Think timeless over trendy.
The location already gives us texture, movement, and magic, so simple styling keeps the focus on your family.
Other Great Galveston Beaches for Photos
While Galveston Island State Park is my number one pick for families, Galveston offers several beautiful photo spots:
East Beach – wide, open, lots of space
Stewart Beach – great amenities and easy access
Beachtown – charming architecture and clean shorelines
San Luis Pass – dramatic skies and peaceful landscapes
But for privacy, backdrops, parking, and restrooms, the Galveston Island State Park really shines—especially for family reunions or sessions with little ones.
