As a mom to a teen and a tween, the one type of photo I wish I had more of is photos of me with my kids when they were little. That's why I absolutely love mommy and me photo sessions. Also, who wants to try to convince their husband to update their family photos? Seriously, that is like pulling teeth, at least around my house. I find that mommy and me photo sessions involve about 50% less stress since we can focus on just the special interactions between a mom and her littles.

A mommy and me photoshoot is more than just a photo session — it’s a way to capture the special bond between a mother and her child. These sessions freeze time so you can look back on those hugs, giggles, and sweet moments long after your little one has grown. Whether you’re celebrating a milestone, creating heirloom portraits, or simply wanting updated family photos, a mommy and me photoshoot is always a beautiful idea.

In this guide, we’ll cover:

  • Why do a mommy and me photoshoot?

  • Mommy and me photoshoot ideas

  • Outfit inspiration (including mommy and me dresses)

  • In-studio vs. at-home sessions

  • Photo ideas for sessions with boys and girls

  • Extra tips for making your photoshoot stress-free

Why Do a Mommy and Me Photoshoot?

Life moves quickly, and moms are often the ones behind the camera rather than in front of it. A mommy and me photoshoot gives you the chance to step into the frame with your little one and celebrate your connection. These photos become keepsakes — the kind you’ll frame on your wall, print in albums, and pass down for generations.

Many families choose mommy and me photography for:

  • Mother’s Day gifts

  • Milestone birthdays

  • Seasonal photos (spring blooms, fall leaves, etc.)

  • Heirloom portraits for future generations

  • Just because (because motherhood deserves to be celebrated every day!)

I have yet to have a mom say that she regretted taking too many photos with her kids. Just saying...

Mommy and Me Photoshoot Ideas

Looking for inspiration? Here are a few creative ways to style your session:

  • Classic Cuddles: Capture natural, candid moments of snuggles, laughter, and play. This is one of my favorites and the way I regularly shoot.

  • Matching Outfits: Coordinated dresses or casual looks can add a cohesive feel without being too staged. This also works well for in studio mommy and me sessions where the pictures can look a bit more refined. I tend not to do super posed studio photos; instead, I set you up in beautiful light and let you interact, play and tickle your littles while I snap some gorgeous photos.

  • Outdoor Adventure: Think open fields, wildflowers, or a park where kids can run and play. These tend to work better with beautiful soft morning light or late afternoon/evening golden hour glow, depending on the season and location. In you're in Houston feel free to reach out to get some suggestions on the best local photo locations for mommy and me photoshoots in nature. There are a ton of gems within a half hour drive (or a bit more if you want to head down to the beach).

  • Generational Photos: Include grandma for a three-generation mommy and me session. I absolutely adore these sessions! Also, can you think of a Christmas gift that grandma would love more? (And that won't have you wandering around a mall in December which is basically my idea of purgatory.)

  • Seasonal Themes: Spring blossoms, summer beach sessions, or cozy fall sweaters. Coordinate outfits to enhance the season you are shooting in. I don't go heavy on props but I do go heavy on vibes.

What you wear can make a big difference in the look of your photos. If you're working with a photographer reach out and get their suggestions- after taking tons of family photos most photographers have a great sense of what types of clothing work best in their location. Dresses for Mommy and Me Photoshoots

  • Flowing maxi dresses in neutral or pastel colors photograph beautifully.

  • Lace, chiffon, or linen fabrics add texture and elegance.

  • Coordinating mommy and me dresses are easy to find from brands like Baltic Born, Joyfolie, or Ivy City Co. However, there's no need to go matchy matchy- just make sure your outfits are coordinated.

Outfits for Kids

  • For girls: tulle skirts, floral dresses, or simple rompers. And don't forget the hair! A cute bow or clips will keep hair back so we can still see their adorable face in all the photos.

  • For boys: linen shirts, khakis, suspenders, or casual jeans with a neutral top.

  • Keep it soft and simple — neutral tones, muted colors, or earthy shades work best.

What to Avoid: Loud prints, neon colors, or clothing with big logos that distract from your connection.

In-Studio Mommy and Me Photoshoots

A studio mommy and me photoshoot is perfect if you want a timeless, classic look. Clean backdrops, flattering natural or studio light, and curated styling let the focus stay on you and your child. Studio sessions also mean no worrying about weather or bugs — just pure connection. These are especially great during the Houston summer heat!

At-Home Mommy and Me Photoshoots

For a more relaxed and personal feel, an at-home mommy and me photoshoot captures you in your own space. Imagine snuggles on the couch, reading together in the nursery, or baking cookies in the kitchen. These lifestyle sessions feel authentic and tell your family’s real story. My at home sessions can be as long or short as you'd like. I love just hanging out and capturing those little moments. The bonus is you have beautiful images that include your own home. I don't know about you but after moving a couple of times with my kids I am especially nostalgic to look back at photos of my kids in our old homes.

Mommy and Me Sessions with Boys or Girls

I am going to preface this by saying that I really, really tried not to stereotype my kids. When I had my daughter I bought her a selection of dolls and toy cars. She tucked her cars in at night. When I had my son we let him play with dolls and more typically boy toys. He literally pretended the dolls were cars. So, here we are. At least for my kids, there is very different boy/girl energy going on.

No need to lean fully into gender stereotyping, but why not celebrate whatever it is that makes your child unique? Whether that is a boy that loves dinosaurs or a girl who loves dressing up, including those aspects of their personality in your mommy and me photo session can make these photos a little time capsule of their personalities at different stages and phases. My daughter doesn't play with dolls anymore but I'm so glad I have adorable photos of her with her dolls when she was little.

With Boys: If your boy is like mine and bursting with energy, focus on an activity that allows him to jump, play and have fun — piggyback rides, building with blocks, reading books together, or outdoor adventures. Outfits like suspenders, rolled-up shirts, or cozy sweaters work well.

With Girls: Soft, whimsical touches like twirling in dresses, flower crowns, or holding hands in a field create dreamy portraits. Matching or coordinating dresses for mom and daughter are especially sweet. Look, I may not be a girly girl and I don't always bother to get dressed up, but there is something seriously sweet about the feminine energy of a mommy daughter photo session.
