Galveston Beach Senior Photos: Payton’s Sunset Senior Session
There’s something about senior photos at the beach that just works. The wind, the movement, the soft light, the sound of the waves—it makes it pretty easy to forget you’re technically there to have your picture taken.
That was exactly what we were going for with Payton’s senior session at 91st Street Pier in Galveston.
Payton wanted something quick, easy, and natural that felt like her. No complicated setups or spending hours changing outfits and locations. Just a relaxed beach session, beautiful light, and plenty of time for chatting and laughing in between photos.
And honestly? Those are some of my favorite sessions to photograph.
A Relaxed Galveston Beach Senior Session
For senior photography, I’m much more interested in capturing how you actually look and move than putting you into a series of stiff poses.
My sessions are very movement-focused, which means you never have to worry about what to do with your hands or whether you’re “posing correctly.” We’ll walk, move, talk, laugh, play with your hair, wander toward the water, and stop for a few more classic portraits along the way.
Basically, we spend a lot of the session talking—and I happen to have a camera in my hands while we do it.
For Payton’s session, we kept things really simple and let the beach do most of the work.
She wore her long hair loose, which I absolutely love for beach sessions. When the sun is behind you, that little bit of movement in the hair catches the backlight beautifully and gives the photos that soft, glowy look that is so perfect for a beach senior session.
Senior Photos by the 91st Street Pier
We photographed around the beach underneath and near the 91st Street Pier, which gave us a few different looks without having to spend half the session driving around.
The beach gave us those softer, more natural portraits, while the pier added something a little more dramatic. I love having some variety within a session like this—especially when the whole thing is supposed to feel easy and natural.
And the light was so good.
September in Galveston can definitely go either way when it comes to the heat, but we lucked out with a beautiful evening that wasn't too hot. The combination of comfortable temperatures, a little breeze, and that gorgeous evening light made the whole session feel effortless.
Payton was also just incredibly sweet, which made my job pretty easy.
I'm so glad we were able to capture this little slice of her senior year for her.
And Yes, There’s a Taco Recommendation
One of the fun things about this particular Galveston beach location is that you’re right underneath Jimmy’s.
Which means you can very easily turn your senior photo session into a little beach outing.
Jimmy’s has a great patio overlooking the ocean, and we stopped in for a bite around the session. The tacos and nachos were both excellent—and I am absolutely a sucker for a good taco, so I take this responsibility very seriously.
If you're making a day of your Galveston senior photos, grabbing something to eat before or after your session is a pretty great way to finish things off.
More Galveston & Surfside Locations for Senior Photos
The 91st Street area is just one of many options for senior photography around Galveston and Surfside.
Depending on the look you're after, we can photograph along the beach, use the piers and other structures for something a little more dramatic, or combine multiple locations to give your gallery more variety.
And if you're up for a bit of a trek, we can even head over to The Strand for a completely different look.
The historic buildings and architecture around The Strand make a really fun contrast to beach photos. It's also practical from a photography standpoint because the buildings give us areas of shade, which means we can start shooting a little earlier in the day rather than waiting for the sun to get low enough for the beach.
Then, once that gorgeous evening light starts happening, we can make our way back toward the water for the sunset portion of the session.

Senior Photos That Don't Feel Like a Photo Shoot
If you're nervous about having your senior photos taken, you're definitely not alone.
A lot of people tell me some version of, "I'm awkward in photos," or "I have no idea what I'm supposed to do."
Good news: you don't need to know.
My senior sessions are designed to feel more like hanging out than standing around waiting for someone to tell you how to pose. I'll give you direction when you need it, but I'll also give you plenty of room to move naturally and just be yourself.
We'll walk. We'll talk. We'll laugh. I'll probably tell you to do something slightly ridiculous at least once.
And somewhere in there, we'll get the beautiful senior portraits you're actually hoping for.
