If you’re a high school junior or senior in the Sugar Land or Houston area, you may be wondering: When is the best time to take my senior photos? It’s one of the top questions I get as a senior photographer—and the answer depends on your schedule, your style, and the kind of vibe you want.

Texas weather can be a little unpredictable, but with some smart planning, you can capture gorgeous images any time of year. Here’s your ultimate seasonal guide to choosing the best time for senior pictures in Sugar Land, Richmond, Katy, and nearby Houston suburbs.

Spring Senior Photos (March - May)

Pros:

  • Fresh greenery and blooming flowers

  • Mild temperatures

  • Soft, flattering light

  • Great for cap-and-gown mini sessions before graduation

Best for: Dreamy, floral, soft and feminine looks. Perfect for parks like Cullinan Park or Oyster Creek Park where nature really pops this time of year.

What to wear: Flowing dresses, pastel colors, denim jackets, neutral tones.

Watch out for: Rainy weeks and pollen if you have allergies. Weekends book up quickly in spring, so schedule early!

Summer Senior Photos (June - August)

Pros:

  • Long daylight hours

  • Golden sunsets and bold colors

  • Easier scheduling (especially in June, before school starts)

Best for: Beach sessions, golden fields, and a glowing, sun-drenched look. Perfect for Surfside Beach or open grassy fields.

What to wear: Bright colors, white dresses, cropped tops, sandals, sun hats.

Watch out for: Heat! I recommend shooting in the early morning or late evening to avoid the midday sun. Bring water and dress in layers.

Fall Senior Photos (September - November)

Pros:

  • Gorgeous warm tones and changing leaves

  • Cooler temps, perfect for layering

  • Natural golden-hour perfection

Best for: Cozy, casual, layered looks with tons of texture. Fall is one of the most popular seasons for senior sessions, and for good reason.

What to wear: Sweaters, boots, warm earth tones, flannel shirts, corduroy and denim.

Watch out for: Busy weekends and limited daylight as the season progresses. Book your session early to secure your preferred date.

Winter Senior Photos (December - February)

Pros:

  • Fewer crowds

  • Subtle, muted backgrounds

  • Unique look that stands out from spring/fall photos

Best for: Urban locations, moody vibes, editorial-style portraits. Great time for indoor studios or town center backdrops.

What to wear: Rich, deep tones like burgundy, navy, forest green. Think stylish layers, wool coats, or chic streetwear.

Watch out for: Shorter daylight hours and occasional cold snaps. But overall, Texas winters are mild and still great for photos!

So... When Should YOU Take Senior Pictures?

Here are some quick tips based on your goals:

  • Want photos in time for your yearbook or senior ads? Book by early fall.

  • Looking for spring cap & gown announcements? Book a spring mini or full session in March or April.

  • Want a full, styled shoot with outfit changes and multiple locations? Choose summer or early fall for maximum flexibility.

  • Want something no one else has? Try a winter shoot!

Whatever season you choose, we’ll plan your shoot around the best light, your outfit style, and your vision—so you get senior portraits that look and feel like you.
