You’ve booked your senior photo session—yay! Now what? Prepping the right way can make the difference between a stressful experience and a fun, confidence-boosting shoot. Whether you're shooting in a downtown spot, grassy field, or beach, here's everything you need to know to show up ready and get photos you'll love.

1. Plan Your Outfits in Advance

Try everything on beforehand—shoes, accessories, even socks. Don’t just assume it all works together. Use a mirror or take mirror selfies to see how it photographs. When in doubt, pack more! You should also feel free to contact your photographer and get their opinion on what fabrics or colours may photograph best depending on the location you are using.

2. Choose a Variety of Styles

Bring at least 3 outfits: one classic, one trendy, and one sentimental (like a letterman jacket or band tee). Make sure you’re comfortable in all of them! In my sessions I love to have clients twirl, spin, dance, jump and generally keep moving (it really helps to move if you are feeling awkward in front of a camera). Make sure your outfit can keep up and you aren't constantly tugging/adjusting because it isn't comfortable.

3. Iron or Steam Your Clothes

Wrinkles show up more than you’d think—especially in close-up shots. Prep your clothes the night before. Or just wear something that is wrinkle proof. Easy:)

4. Pack a ‘Photo Session Survival Kit’

Include:

  • A lint roller

  • Touch-up makeup or blotting sheets

  • Hairbrush or comb

  • Water & snack

  • Backup shoes for walking between locations

Just trust me on the shoes.

5. Don’t Try a New Look the Day Of

Stick to hairstyles and makeup you’ve worn before. If you want to elevate your look, do a trial run with a pro before your session.

6. Be Well-Rested and Hydrated

It sounds basic, but your skin, energy, and mood will all benefit from a good night’s sleep and plenty of water. Also, make sure not to skimp on the moisturizer! It is easier to edit out a red spot than dry skin:)

7. Arrive Early

Plan to arrive 10–15 minutes before your session starts so you’re not rushing. We’ll use that time to go over outfits and chat about locations.

8. Trust Your Photographer

I’ll guide you through poses and prompts so nothing feels stiff or awkward. Just relax, have fun, and let your personality shine.

9. Bring Someone You Trust

A parent, sibling, or friend can help carry stuff, hype you up, and even make you laugh in those candid moments. Or better yet, book a joint session with your bestie so you can make sure to get friend shots and still get all the solo shots you want. Who's better to hype you up into giving your best model impression?

10. Have Fun With It

This session is all about celebrating YOU. Laugh, twirl, jump, dance—whatever feels right. These memories are yours to keep forever.

Senior photos should feel like a celebration, not a chore. A little prep goes a long way in making your session smooth, fun, and full of photos you’ll actually want to frame.

Need help prepping? I send a full checklist to all clients after booking—plus outfit help, location scouting, and day-of support. Let’s make your shoot amazing!
