Galveston & Surfside Dog Beach Photography: A Sunrise Session with Sunshine

There are few things I love more than a dog who thinks the beach is the greatest place on earth — and Sunshine the golden retriever definitely falls into that category.

For this recent Surfside dog beach photography session, I met Suzanne and her beautiful golden retriever at Stahlman Beach in Surfside, Texas, just after sunrise. Since Suzanne and Sunshine live in Surfside, this stretch of beach is already part of their regular routine. They often walk here together, and Sunshine especially loves two things: fetching driftwood and swimming in the Gulf.

So naturally, we had to build the session around both.

A Sunrise Dog Photography Session at Stahlman Beach

Stahlman Beach is one of my favorite locations for dog photography in Surfside and the Galveston area, especially for sunrise sessions.

One of the biggest advantages is how easy it is to get to. There is accessible parking close to the beach, and there is even a basic shower available for rinsing sand off after your session — which is particularly helpful when your dog has spent the morning enthusiastically throwing herself into the Gulf!

And then there is the beach itself.

Outside of the busiest summer season, this stretch of beach is often wonderfully quiet in the early morning. It can also be a great option for evening photography sessions. That means we can spend more time photographing your dog rather than trying to work around crowds, parked vehicles, umbrellas and beachgoers.

For beach photography, I love having room to let dogs run, play, swim and simply be dogs.

And Sunshine took full advantage of it.

Sunshine: Golden Retriever, Professional Beach Model & Part Otter

Sunshine was absolutely adorable.

She was happy to pose for a few individual portraits, but she really came alive whenever there was a piece of driftwood involved.

We captured individual portraits of her, plenty of action photographs of her racing after her favorite beach treasures, and lots of photographs of her swimming and playing in the water. We also made sure to capture plenty of images of Sunshine and Suzanne together.

Some of my favorite photographs from the session were the ones where Sunshine disappeared into the water.

I am not exaggerating when I say she looked like part golden retriever, part otter.

She would run into the water, dive down and somehow seem to completely sink into the Gulf before popping back up again. It was hilarious and ridiculously cute — and exactly the kind of personality I love capturing in pet photography.

Because while a beautiful portrait of your dog is wonderful, the photographs I treasure most are often the ones that show what your dog actually loves to do.

For Sunshine, that meant water, driftwood, running and spending time with her person.

Why I Love Sunrise Beach Photography for Dogs

If you are considering a dog beach photography session in Galveston or Surfside, sunrise is one of my favorite times to photograph.

There are a few reasons.

First, the beach is generally much quieter early in the morning, particularly outside of the peak summer season. That gives your dog more freedom to explore without as many distractions.

Second, there is something magical about the light.

The soft morning light creates beautiful, warm images without the harsh shadows you can get in the middle of the day. It also gives us that gorgeous combination of blue water, soft skies and glowing light that makes beach photographs feel so timeless.

And third — especially if your dog loves to run — cooler mornings are simply more comfortable.

Fall and early spring are some of my favorite times for beach dog photography in the Galveston and Surfside area. The mornings can be wonderfully cool, the beach is often quieter, and your dog can enjoy running and playing without dealing with the heat of a Texas summer.

Of course, dogs don't exactly follow our photography schedules. If your dog is an evening dog rather than a morning dog, an evening beach session can also be beautiful, particularly during the quieter months.

Dog Photography That Lets Your Dog Be a Dog

My approach to pet photography is not about making your dog sit perfectly still for an entire session.

Honestly, that's not nearly as much fun.

I want to photograph the personality that makes your dog your dog.

That might mean sitting beautifully for a portrait.

It might mean running full speed down the beach.

It might mean chasing a ball, carrying around a piece of driftwood, digging in the sand or launching themselves straight into the Gulf.

And yes, sometimes it means completely ignoring the photographer because there is something much more interesting happening in the water.

Those moments are often the best ones.

For Sunshine and Suzanne, we were able to combine beautiful portraits with plenty of movement and play. The result was a gallery that felt like them — not just a collection of posed photographs.

Planning a Surfside or Galveston Dog Beach Photography Session

If your dog loves the beach, Surfside and Galveston are fantastic locations for a dog photography session.

Stahlman Beach is one of my favorites because it gives us a beautiful stretch of coastline without the feeling of being right in the middle of a crowded beach. The easy parking and nearby rinse-off shower are also nice practical bonuses when your dog inevitably decides that getting as sandy and wet as possible is part of the experience.

For dogs who love to swim, we can incorporate plenty of water photographs. For dogs who would rather keep their paws dry, there is still plenty of opportunity for running, exploring and cuddling with their humans.

And if your dog has a favorite beach activity — whether that's chasing a ball, digging, carrying sticks or simply walking beside you — we'll make time for that, too.

Because years from now, I don't just want you to remember what your dog looked like.

I want you to remember who they were.

Looking for a Dog Photographer in Galveston or Surfside?

I photograph dogs and their people throughout Galveston, Surfside Beach, and the greater Houston area, with both beach and studio options available.

Whether you have a goofy golden retriever who thinks she's an otter, an old dog who deserves to be celebrated, a new puppy who won't sit still for more than three seconds, or simply want beautiful photographs of your best friend, I'd love to create something that captures their personality.

And if your dog loves the beach as much as Sunshine does, let's take advantage of it.

Sunrise at Surfside Beach might just be one of my favorite places to photograph them.
