Newborn portrait of mom and baby wrapped in blue blanket sleeping by Danielle West Photography

I had the absolute pleasure of capturing some photos of Ashley with her beautiful new baby boy.

While I usually recommend that newborn photos be taken within the first two weeks after birth — when babies are extra sleepy, curly, and still in that sweet newborn stage — this little guy had his own timeline!

He arrived early, which meant his adjusted birth age was younger than his actual age. That’s something I always take into account when planning newborn sessions. Babies who arrive early often need a little more time before they’re ready for photos, and using their adjusted age gives both mom and baby a chance to rest, recover, and settle in at home before the photoshoot.

So even though he was technically over a month old when we did his session, we treated it like a newborn session — just with a few extra cuddles and breaks built in.

And honestly? It was perfect.

He might not have slept quite as long as a brand-new newborn, but he was so sweet, expressive, and patient. We captured so many heart-melting photos of mom and baby — my favorite kind of images. Those quiet, connected moments are what I love most about lifestyle newborn photography.

Why You Don’t Need to Stress About “Perfect Timing”

Every baby is different, and every birth story is unique. Whether your baby arrives early, late, or right on schedule, we can create beautiful photos that celebrate your new family.

If your baby was premature or spent extra time in the NICU, please don’t worry about missing the two-week window you often see mentioned online. We’ll plan your session around what’s best for your little one — their comfort and readiness always come first.

Some of my favorite sessions have been with “older” newborns who are more alert and make eye contact. You get photos full of personality, connection, and the sweetest little expressions that only show up once they’ve had time to wake up to the world.

A Few Session Highlights

Ashley and her baby were absolute naturals in front of the camera. I always love capturing the quiet, in-between moments — a gentle touch, a yawn, a sleepy snuggle. Those are the photos you’ll look back on years later and feel all over again.

We ended up with a gorgeous gallery of over 120+ photos, but here are a few of my favorites! (Trust me, narrowing them down was the hardest part.)
