Hey mama, congrats on your new little human! You’re probably juggling diapers, snuggles, and scrolling Instagram for all the baby inspo. One question I get a lot is, “When should we schedule our newborn photo session?” Spoiler: the answer is usually earlier than you think!

Why 5–14 Days Postpartum Is the Sweet Spot

Most photographers recommend the first two weeks—especially around days 5–10—for a few great reasons:

  1. Sleepy & Posing-Friendly

Newborns at this age still sleep deeply and naturally curl into that adorable "womb shape." That means we can capture those peaceful, snuggly shots without twisting them into a pretzel (and no props required!).

  2. Fewer Skin Breakouts

Baby acne and flaky skin often show up around 2–3 weeks, and growth spurts hit around then too—making sessions a little messier (and crankier).

  3. Still Fresh & Tiny

Between 5–14 days, most babies are still tiny, flexible, and not overly alert. After two weeks, they start un-curling and drifting toward fussiness.

Understanding Baby’s Development in the First Month

  • Day 5–10: Baby sleeps 15–17 hours a day, is deeply curled and flexible—ideal for safe, classic newborn shots.

  • Day 10–14: Growth spurt peaks. More cluster feedings + startence of baby acne—but still mostly sleepy.

  • Week 2–4: More awake time, first coos and tiny smiles, more expressive—but acne likely on its way.

  • Weeks 4–8: Eyes open, smiles an option, more alert and interactive—but less curly and less cooperative for classic newborn poses.

Missed the Sweet Spot? No Worries—Lifestyle Sessions Are Beautiful Too

If you're beyond the baby’s first two weeks, don’t stress! At 4–8 weeks, your baby is alert and expressive—great for capturing personality and meaningful parent-baby interactions. And they are still taking regular naps so we can usually get some adorable sleeping shots as well. My style is all about real connection—so whether curled in a swaddle or smitten eyes fixed on Mom or Dad, we’ll capture it.

Common Newborn Skin Concerns & What You Should Know

Babies have delicate skin that changes fast. Here's what’s normal and how to handle it:

  • Baby Acne (Neonatal Acne)

Appears around weeks 2–6, caused by maternal hormones. It often clears up without treatment, but gentle washing with mild soap (like Cetaphil or Dove) helps. If it persists, you can chat with your pediatrician. Some sites mention using breast milk topically, which might help a bit, though evidence is limited.

  • Dry, Peeling Skin

Common in the first days as babies adjust from the womb to air. It's usually harmless—just don’t pick it. Use hypoallergenic detergent, a humidifier, and gentle lotion. This usually passes within a few weeks parents.com.

  • Eczema, Cradle Cap & More

If your baby develops persistent rashes or scaly patches, check out trusted resources like Verywell Health for guidance on these common newborn skin issues verywellhealth.com. My daughter had cradle cap for over 6 months and we found that olive oil was a great treatment (gross but strangely satisfying to brush out).

Baby Safety Is My Top Priority

Listen, your baby isn’t my prop . That means:

  • No extreme or “pretzel” poses—my philosophy is: you don’t need to twist a baby into a pretzel to get a gorgeous shot. Babies are naturally beautiful.

  • Camera-first philosophy: We capture real, everyday connections—snuggles, yawns, eye contact—not dramatic setups.

  • Warm, clean setup: I sanitize surfaces, keep sessions cozy and softly lit, and always prioritize comfort.

  • Parent-in-spot combos: I always have a parent or assistant near the baby in case they stir or startle.

  • No props heavier than recommended: I avoid heavy hats, props, or anything that touches the baby in a risky way.

Your baby's comfort and safety are non-negotiable. You'll never see me balancing tricks or Instagram trends that compromise well-being.
