When I arrived at The Gundog Club just south of Houston to shoot a photo session for dog-boarder & trainer William, I knew it would be fun (hanging out with dogs is definitely one of my favorite things to do) — but I didn’t expect how inspiring the place would turn out to be.
Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at the day, the property, the dogs, and why this facility truly stands out for anyone looking for high-quality boarding and training for their hunting and sporting dogs.
Meeting William and the Dogs
From the moment I stepped onto the large, open property, it was clear: the dogs are not just “kept” — they’re living their best lives. William has such a genuine love for what he does. Whether he was walking the kennel grounds, training a dog, or setting up for a swim, it was evident he had a strong bond with his dogs and an excellent way of working with them.
We got some really fun shots of the dogs jumping into the small pond on the property — full of energy, joy and purpose. They were swimming, retrieving, running full throttle across grass and prairie.
And during the training sequences, I watched dogs heel perfectly by William’s side, respond to commands with laser-focus, and carry a dummy with precision when retrieving. It was a joy to capture on camera.
The Property & Facilities
The Gundog Club sits on about 40 acres of coastal prairie south of Houston. The Gundog Club+2The Gundog Club+2 While the buildings are relatively new and still being developed, they already have a modern, clean feel — large kennels, open space, well-designed training and boarding facilities. The kennel area is large and spacious, giving the dogs room to move, explore and be comfortable rather than feeling confined.
The pond and open fields are a huge plus. When you photograph dogs in action — jumping, fetching, swimming — the open natural space makes for beautiful shots. And from a dog-owner’s perspective: having swimming, running, and training space built right into the property means your dog gets more than “just boarding” — they get active time, stimulation, training and fun.
The Training Approach
Here’s where The Gundog Club really impressed me: the boarding isn’t just “put the dog in a run, we’ll feed and walk him once or twice”. The dogs were fully engaged in a structured, enriching environment with time for exercise and training. Daily routines include airing dogs multiple times a day, working on obedience fundamentals (kennel manners, door manners, waiting to eat until told, etc.).
The dogs I photographed responded beautifully — there were no chaotic “play time” scenes, but rather purposeful running, retrieving, swimming, and training.
One of the shots I got: William quietly holding his rifle, giving a command to a dog, the dog poised, then backing up the dummy, retrieving straight to hand. It was one of those “this is what it looks like when training actually works” moments.
Why This Place Is Great for Your Dog
Active and engaged environment: If your dog is a high-drive bird dog, pointer, flusher or retriever (and The Gundog Club serves those breed families) then this is ideal.
Training continues during boarding: Even for short-term boarding, your dog doesn’t just “hang out” — they get training, structure, and conditioning.
Large property + modern facilities: Ample space for dogs to run, play, swim and train, combined with modern kennels and a developing but quality setup.
Peace of mind for owners: You leave your dog knowing they’re having fun, getting stimulation and structure — and you pick them up not just “safe”, but better behaved, sharper, and ready for whatever you’ve got next.
Final Thoughts
If you’re looking for a place to board your hunting or sporting dog where “boarding” isn’t just “we’ll watch him while you’re gone”, but rather “we’ll take care of him, train him, challenge him, and send him home better”, then The Gundog Club is worth checking out. And if you’re an owner worried your dog will ‘just hang out’ and lose ground, trust me — you’ll see from the photos and the vibe that the opposite is true here.
