How to Prepare Your Dog for a Photoshoot: Stress-Free Tips
So you’ve decided to book a professional photoshoot for your pup — yay! But then the questions start rolling in: What if my dog won’t sit still? Do I need to groom them? Should I bring toys?
Take a deep breath, dog moms and dads. As a professional pet photographer in Sugar Land, I’ve seen it all — from camera-shy pups to high-energy wigglebutts. With a little prep, we’ll capture portraits you’ll treasure forever. Here’s how to get ready.
Grooming Before the Photoshoot
Bath & Brush: Give your dog a light bath the day before. Freshly brushed fur looks amazing in photos.
Face & Eyes: Wipe away eye gunk and trim hair around the eyes if needed — expressions pop when eyes are clear.
Nails: Trimmed nails prevent scratches (for both you and my camera gear!).
Gear & Accessories
Collars & Leashes: Neutral tones look timeless, but bright collars can pop beautifully. Avoid overly busy patterns.
Bandanas & Bows: Fun accessories can add personality without overwhelming the shot.
Leash Style: A thin leash (or slip lead) is easier to edit out in post-processing than a bulky one.
Training & Commands
Don’t worry if your pup isn’t perfectly trained. The goal isn’t perfection — it’s personality! Still, practicing these basics helps:
Sit & Stay: Useful for posed portraits.
Come: Great for action shots as they run toward you.
Leave It: Helps keep distractions under control.
Bring the Right Supplies
Treats (tiny, bite-sized ones work best).
Favorite toy for playtime or focus.
Water & collapsible bowl (especially in Houston heat).
A lint roller for you (because fur happens).
Remember: Candid photos are often the best. Your dog doesn’t have to be perfect — they just have to be themselves.
