Evelyn’s 3rd Birthday Photoshoot: Glitter, Giggles, and a Cat Cameo!

There’s something magical about turning three — that sweet spot between toddler curiosity and full-on kid energy. Evelyn’s third birthday session was exactly that: full of sparkle, laughter, and a few surprises (including one furry, four-legged guest star!).

Her mom, Abby, reached out to me with a mix of excitement and nerves. She’s expecting a new baby in March — which made this session extra special, as Evelyn’s last birthday as an only child. But she was also a little worried. “Evelyn’s pretty shy,” she said. “She doesn’t always smile for the camera.”

Challenge accepted.

The secret to photographing toddlers? Play. Always play. Within minutes of walking into my Sugar Land studio, Evelyn was jumping, dancing, tossing star confetti, and clutching her giant number 3 balloon like a trophy. I made sure to use extra-large star glitter (because let’s be honest — I’ve learned the hard way that tiny glitter means finding sparkles in your shoes for weeks). The big stars weren’t just photogenic; they turned into a full-blown game of “pick up the stars!” that kept Evelyn giggling and moving the entire time.

We blasted her favorite songs, sang along, jumped as high as we could, and even practiced our best dinosaur roars.

That’s when my cat decided it was time to join the fun. He sauntered right into the set, struck a pose, and before long, Evelyn was feeding him treats and grinning from ear to ear. It was pure, unscripted joy — the kind that makes photographing toddlers so rewarding.

By the end of the session, Abby was glowing (and not just from pregnancy). As she was leaving she mentioned that she had tried to keep her expectations down heading into our photoshoot since she just assumed we wouldn't get any smiley toddler pictures. But she was beyond thrilled with how it turned out. That’s the best kind of compliment — knowing we captured not just beautiful portraits, but real moments of connection and personality.
