One of my favorite parts of being a photographer is getting to collaborate with other creatives — artists, actors, musicians, makers, and entrepreneurs who have poured themselves into building something deeply personal.
Branding photography for creatives should feel more than just “professional.” It should capture personality, process, energy, and identity.
That’s exactly what we focused on during this recent branding and headshot session with Allan Chow, a contemporary palette knife painter and artist based in Sugar Land whose work is known for its bold color, expressive texture, and dramatic landscapes. Allan’s work has been featured in galleries and collections across the country, and his paintings are instantly recognizable for their rich impasto texture and vibrant movement.
Creating Branding Photos Inside an Artist Studio
One of the things I loved most about this session was that we photographed Allan in his actual working studio.
The space itself was fairly compact, which honestly made the session even more fun creatively. I
Instead of needing a huge studio, we focused on using:
wide angle compositions
creative framing
layered foreground elements
dramatic perspective
environmental portraits
texture-focused closeups
…to create a gallery with a huge amount of variety.
This is something I always remind clients: you do not need a massive luxury studio space to create compelling branding imagery. Thoughtful lighting, angles, composition, and storytelling matter far more.

Professional Headshots — But Make Them Artistic
For this session, we wanted a combination of:
polished professional headshots
candid creative portraits
action-style images
website banner images
social media content
editorial-style branding photos
We captured more traditional headshots with direct eye contact and clean compositions for professional use, while also creating more dynamic “in process” images of Allan painting in the studio.
And honestly? Even though no actual painting happened during the session, the final images absolutely look like we caught him mid-creation.
That’s one of the fun things about branding photography — it’s often less about documenting reality exactly as it happens and more about visually communicating the feeling and identity of your work.

Showcasing the Artist and the Artwork
One thing that was especially important for this session was making sure Allan’s artwork itself remained central to the gallery.
His paintings are filled with incredible palette knife texture, rich layering, and bold movement, so we intentionally included:
closeup texture shots
detail images of the canvas
wider environmental portraits
artwork display images
studio atmosphere shots
This gives him a versatile collection of branding images he can now use across:
his website
social media
press features
gallery submissions
interviews
newsletters
marketing materials
upcoming media campaigns
promotional materials for future art shows
We also intentionally photographed both horizontal and vertical compositions to give maximum flexibility for web banners, Instagram posts, stories, print materials, and advertising layouts.
That kind of strategic planning makes a huge difference during branding sessions for small businesses and creatives.
Why Branding Photography Matters for Artists & Creatives
Artists are their brand.
Collectors, galleries, clients, and media outlets are often just as interested in the artist’s personality and process as they are in the final work itself.
Strong branding photography helps create a cohesive visual identity that feels professional while still remaining authentic and personal.
For creatives especially, branding sessions can help:
elevate website design
create stronger social media presence
improve media and press opportunities
build audience connection
support gallery submissions
create marketing consistency
tell the story behind the work
And honestly — creatives tend to bring the best energy into sessions because they already understand visual storytelling.
