A Fun & Dramatic In-Studio Maternity Session with Hannah & Allen

Some maternity sessions are quiet and romantic. Some are full of gorgeous, dramatic portraits. And then there are sessions like Hannah and Allen’s — where we manage to get all of that, plus a whole lot of laughing and even a few dance moves.
This was such a fun in-studio maternity photoshoot at my Sugar Land photography studio, and I absolutely loved the variety we were able to create.
One of my favorite things about studio maternity photography is that we can completely change the mood of an image simply by changing the lighting. Hannah and Allen don't have to move, change locations, or do anything differently — I can change the position, direction and intensity of my studio lights and suddenly the exact same pose has an entirely different feel.
And for a pregnant mama, not having to trek around from location to location is a pretty nice bonus!
Three Maternity Outfits, Three Completely Different Looks
We started with a dreamy light grey maternity dress with layers of chiffon. The volume and movement of the fabric created those big, dramatic maternity portraits that are so beautiful in a studio setting. I love dresses with lots of fabric because they give us something to play with — the layers can spread out, catch the light and create beautiful shapes around the body.

Then we changed things up completely with a more casual jeans, white button-down and bandeau bra look.

I love including at least one outfit that feels less traditionally "maternity." It gives the gallery some variety and can feel a little more like you rather than simply a series of formal portraits. It also gave us a great opportunity to let Hannah and Allen's personalities come through.
And then we finished with one of my favorites: a dreamy white, off-the-shoulder dress with a
closer fit.

The contrast between a large, voluminous maternity gown and a more fitted dress is really interesting photographically. The fuller dresses can create dramatic shapes and movement, while a close-fitting dress beautifully highlights the belly and creates much more elegant, streamlined lines.
I especially love photographing fitted maternity dresses with more dramatic studio lighting. The light and shadows can emphasize the curves and create portraits that feel almost editorial.
The Best Part? They Were Having Fun
As beautiful as the portraits were, my favorite part of this session was how much fun Hannah and Allen were having together.

We got the gorgeous, carefully posed maternity portraits, of course. But we also got plenty of laughing, movement, little in-between moments — and yes, even some dancing.
Those are some of my favorite images from a session.

I don't want every photograph in a maternity gallery to feel like you were standing perfectly still and following directions for two hours. I want there to be images that actually feel like the two of you.
That's why I like mixing beautiful, more polished portraits with candid moments and plenty of opportunities to interact with each other. Sometimes the best expression happens immediately after I tell you to do something ridiculous.
And sometimes I just let you dance.

Why I Love In-Studio Maternity Photography
There are lots of beautiful ways to photograph maternity sessions, but a studio gives us a level of control that you simply don't get outdoors.
We can create soft, bright and dreamy portraits, then switch to something darker and more dramatic — all without changing locations.
That means we can take one pose and photograph it several completely different ways.
For example, a simple standing maternity portrait can become:
Soft and bright with even, flattering light
Dramatic with deeper shadows and directional lighting
More editorial with carefully controlled highlights
Romantic and intimate with softer, lower-contrast lighting
And Hannah didn't have to move an inch.
For pregnant women who are already dealing with enough logistics, that's a pretty great feature of a Sugar Land studio maternity photography session.
Creating a Maternity + Newborn Gallery That Feels Connected
Another thing I love about doing maternity photography in the studio is that we can create a visual connection between your maternity and newborn portraits.
If you're planning to book your newborn session with me too, we can use similar lighting, backdrops and overall stylingfor both sessions.

That doesn't mean the photographs have to look identical. Quite the opposite — I want each session to have its own personality. But when you put your maternity and newborn photographs together, there can be a cohesive look that makes the entire collection feel intentional.
And eventually, you'll have photographs documenting the transition from "just the two of us" to "look who joined us." That's pretty special.
